Happy Indigenous Peoples' Day

           Why Indigenous Peoples' Day Matters

Hey friends! Let’s chat about Indigenous Peoples' Day, a holiday that’s gaining more recognition each year. Celebrated on the second Monday of October (originally coined Columbus Day), this day honors the history, culture, and contributions of Indigenous people across the Americas. It’s a time to reflect, learn, and recognize the original caretakers of the land we now live on.

For a long time, the focus was on Columbus Day, but many folks started to question whether celebrating someone who caused harm and suffering was the best way to go. Columbus’ arrival in 1492 brought colonization, violence, and loss to Indigenous communities. Indigenous Peoples' Day shifts the narrative to celebrate resilience, survival, and cultural richness. It’s not about erasing history but about telling the whole story.

So, how can we celebrate in a meaningful way? Start by learning about the tribes native to your area — you might be surprised how much local history you didn’t know! Attend an event, like a powwow or community gathering. Many places also host talks, art exhibits, or film screenings highlighting Indigenous culture and current issues.

Another great way to show support? Shop from Indigenous-owned businesses or donate to organizations that support Indigenous rights. And if you’ve got kids, this is the perfect chance to introduce them to stories, traditions, and art from Indigenous cultures.

Indigenous Peoples' Day reminds us that history is more than textbooks and holidays—it’s about understanding people’s lived experiences. Celebrating this day helps us honor the past and build a future rooted in respect and inclusion. So, take a moment to listen, learn, and celebrate. It’s a small step, but it makes a big difference.

First celebrated in 1992 Indigenous Peoples Day was officially proclaimed a national holiday in 2021.

           Hispanic Heritage Month: Let’s Celebrate!

Hispanic Heritage Month is almost here! The month-long celebration runs from September 15th to October 15

    </sup>

            Annually.

During these four weeks, we get to celebrate the rich culture, history, and contributions of Hispanic and Latinx communities in the United States.

So, how did this celebration get started?

Originally, it began as Hispanic Heritage Week in 1968, but it was expanded to a full month in 1988. The dates are significant because they mark the independence anniversaries of several Latin American countries, like Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Plus, Mexico’s Independence Day is on September 16th, and Chile celebrates theirs on September 18th. So, it’s one big celebration of freedom and culture!

Now, let’s talk about the celebrations. Hispanic Heritage Month is full of vibrant events, delicious food, and incredible music.

From festivals to parades, here’s how people across the country are getting in on the action:

           Festivals

Hispanic Heritage Month wouldn’t be complete without festivals. Think live music, colorful outfits, and tasty food trucks serving tacos, tamales, and churros. Many cities throw street fairs or festivals where you can check out local Latinx artists, dance to salsa or reggaeton, and eat your weight in empanadas!

           Concerts

Hispanic culture has a deep connection to music, from traditional mariachi bands to modern pop stars like Shakira and Bad Bunny.

During Hispanic Heritage Month, many cities host concerts featuring traditional and modern music!

           Food

If you’ve ever wanted an excuse to eat Mexican, Cuban, or Puerto Rican food for a whole month straight, you’ve got it. Hispanic Heritage Month is all about embracing the food. Restaurants often have special deals, and some even offer cooking classes so you can learn how to make authentic dishes. Tacos, tamales, paella—there’s something for everyone. And don’t forget to wash it down with some horchata or a margarita.

           Art Exhibits

Hispanic artists have contributed so much to the world of art, and during this month, museums and galleries often showcase works from both historical and contemporary Latinx artists. From vibrant murals to interesting sculptures, the art during Hispanic Heritage Month is both beautiful and powerful. Check out local exhibits to get inspired and learn more about the diverse experiences within the Hispanic community.

           Storytelling and Educational Events

If you're a history buff or just want a low barrier educational experience, Hispanic Heritage Month is packed with opportunities to learn. Libraries, schools, and community centers often host storytelling sessions, film screenings, and panel discussions to explore the achievements and struggles of Hispanic persons throughout history. Think of it as a way to celebrate and get educated at the same time.

But most important, let’s talk about Why It Matters.

Hispanic Heritage Month is more than just fun and food—it’s about recognizing and honoring the deep impact Hispanic and Latinx communities have on the U.S. economy, culture, and society. Whether it’s through music, dance, food, or art, these communities have shaped and continue to shape the fabric of American life. By celebrating, we’re acknowledging their contributions and standing in solidarity with them.

So, this month, whether you're attending a local parade, cooking a traditional dish, volunteering at an event or sponsoring an organization just make sure to take part in the festivities. It’s a time to celebrate diversity, unity, and the rich cultural heritage that makes America what it is today.

           Remember…

Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, is a significant holiday in American history. It marks the end of slavery in the United States and is celebrated every year on June 19th.

So, what exactly is Juneteenth, and how did this holiday transpire?

On January 1, 1863, President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. This order declared that all enslaved people in the Confederate states were free. However, the news didn't reach everyone right away. Many enslaved people in Texas, the most western state of the Confederacy, didn't hear about their freedom until much later.

It wasn't until June 19, 1865, that Union General Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, with about 2,000 Union troops. He announced General Order No. 3, which proclaimed that all enslaved people were free. This was more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. The news spread quickly, and June 19th became a day of celebration and joy for newly freed people. This day came to be known as "Juneteenth," a blend of "June" and "nineteenth."

Juneteenth is important because it represents freedom and the end of slavery in the United States. It is a reminder of the struggles and injustices faced by African Americans and the long fight for freedom and equality. Juneteenth is not just a historical event; it’s a day to celebrate African American culture and heritage!

In recent years, there has been a growing movement to recognize Juneteenth as a national holiday. Finally, in 2021, this became a reality when President Joe Biden signed a bill making Juneteenth a federal holiday! This recognition is a huge step toward acknowledging the importance of this day in American history.

How do you choose which holidays to celebrate?

Summer is a time for celebrations, and in the United States we have numerous cultural holidays and celebrations every month! May is packed full of holidays starting with the monthlong celebration of Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage, followed by Cinco de Mayo, and ending with Africa Day! With so many celebrations how do we choose what to support, or should we show support for all? How can we celebrate one holiday without celebrating the other?

Let’s break it down into bite size pieces and talk about it!

A simple way to narrow down your decision is to look at basic factors including what cultures are represented in the fabric of your city. What events are already happening, and are they successful on their own? What events in your community have a large support system, large attendance, and are making a good impact? These are the basic questions you want to ask when trying to determine what events, holidays, and programs your organization could support.

For example, Cinco de Mayo tends to be a largely celebrated holiday throughout the United States. Attendance, support, and impact tend to be relatively large in most areas, whereas Africa Day tends to be less celebrated, and supported in many communities. So, with these things in mind decide what your community looks like, and where you see a discrepancy. Once you have narrowed down that information you will have a better idea of what event you may want to show heavier support for without prejudice.

A good rule of thumb is no matter what event(s) you land on, at a minimum, you should always show support for all cultural holidays through your social media channels, especially if there is a celebration for that event in your community. Recognize the power of elevating the voices of others!

So, in choosing an upcoming holiday, let’s take a look at Africa Day and learn a little bit about the holiday, and see how organizations around the country are showing support in celebration!

Africa Day, celebrated on May 25th, is an important day that honors the founding of the Organization of African Unity (OAU), which later became the African Union (AU). This day is significant for Africans worldwide as it celebrates their heritage, culture, and achievements.

Africa Day is also an opportunity to promote unity among people of African descent. It is a day to celebrate Pan-Africanism, a movement that advocates for the unity and solidarity of all Africans, both on the continent and in the diaspora (Diaspora = Africans, and those of African descent no longer on the continent). Pan-Africanism emphasizes the shared history and experiences of people of African descent and seeks to promote their common interests.

So, who are some of the cities celebrating Africa day, and could you community get involved?

In Portland, Oregon there are celebrations of Africa Day throughout the city with events featuring music concerts, art exhibitions, and cultural discussions, providing a platform for the African diaspora to share their heritage. Check out the Pan African Cultural foundation for their updates on their annual Pan African festival!

Additionally, in Los Angeles, California, the Fowler Museum at UCLA offers a joyful annual festival of live music, dance, artmaking, refreshments, and the children’s village with family friendly activities!

Finally, in Washington, D.C. The African Union Mission to the United States often hosts a special Africa Day celebration. This event includes cultural performances, speeches, and a celebration of African cuisine.

These are just three examples but a quick google search will show you numerous celebrations all over the United States.

So, maybe it’s time for your organization to get involved. You can start by simply doing research to see if you have any events happening in your community. If so, reach out to organizers and see if your organization can volunteer, sponsor, or in some way take part in their celebration. Find out what needs they have and see how you can be a bridge.

If there are no events celebrating Africa Day in your community, consider putting one together. Always check to see if you have a local organization in your community representative of the culture you are celebrating. If you do, reach out and see if they would like to meet, partner, or participate in the celebrations. But with Africa Day right around the corner you can still throw together a quick and fun celebration. The easiest way to do that is hosting a movie night at the local community center, school or library possibly featuring African snacks, and showcasing a film either educational or family friendly in honor of the celebration. Make sure to always include some educational speaking components and fact check the information you are sharing.

Educating others about cultural holidays is one of the easiest ways to break down stereotypes, barriers, and fear of the unknown in your community. Remember, education and inclusion lead to more inclusive spaces for all.

In conclusion, celebrating and supporting cultural holidays is instrumental for all organizations and businesses. Everyone that lives, works, and thrives in your community deserves to be honored and celebrated. Celebrations of cultural diversity promote unity among people of all walks of life, and it truly brings communities together.

Celebrations of diversity…. an amazing way to create social wealth in communities and break down the barriers that divide us all.

Some communities have elaborate celebrations throughout their city showcasing and celebrating the different people that live, thrive, work, and play in their community. But why is this being done by some communities, and not all communities around the United States?

We tend to see vibrant celebrations predominantly in larger and medium size cities, but what about the small towns, how are they able to successfully celebrate diversity when they have little or no access to cultural organizations?

Luckily, living in a small community with little or no cultural organizations doesn’t mean you can’t celebrate diversity. Let’s talk about some fun ways you and your organization can celebrate diversity and why it's so important for each community in the United States to participate.

Cultural celebrations teach us important lessons about respect, tolerance, and understanding. They show us that even though we may be different, we can still come together and celebrate what makes each of us unique. So, whether it's Juneteenth, Carnival, or Chinese New Year, cultural celebrations are a great way to bring people together and celebrate our differences. These celebrations let people share their traditions, food, music, and stories with each other. This is a great way to learn about different cultures, break down negative stereotypes, and the barriers that unfortunately cause fear and division in our country and in the world.

Now that you have a better understanding of the importance of these celebrations let’s talk about how you or your organization can celebrate diversity any day of the year!

Movie events showcasing different cultures provides an opportunity to learn about different societies, traditions, and ways of life. Consider Hosting a Summer film festival with once monthly culturally specific movies. You could even make a bigger educational impact and corelate these movies with direct holidays such as showcasing films about Juneteenth on June 19 or Mexican Independence Day films on September 16. Being strategic in your planning will help educate others on the significance behind these important holidays.

Celebrating holidays from different cultures allows for a deeper understanding of diverse traditions and customs. This one can be tricky to do with the absence of cultural organizations however, it can be successfully done. In the absence of organizations, you would need to create an ad hoc committee to temporarily bring people representative of the specific cultural holiday together. The committee would decide the elements of the event and you would lead as the coordinator. You must be very cognizant that the committee decides what they want, and how it should look. You CANNOT decide how to celebrate another culture’s holiday, regardless of research. If you do not have community members representative of the culture, you intend to celebrate then this is not a viable option for your organization.

Ultimately, it is up to everyone to provide a safe and welcoming community. As leaders in a community, you have a responsibility to celebrate the different cultures that make America a welcoming place for all. Start figuring out what you can do in your community to celebrate others and make your town or city the most inclusive and welcoming place you can.

With the signs of summer popping up all around us we look forward to the festivals, events, and summer BBQ’s that bring us joy, and give us a lovely tan. What May also brings is the celebration of Cinco de Mayo. Cinco de Mayo is a Mexican holiday that many people enjoy, especially in the United States and Mexico. However, contrary to what some people have experienced, it’s not just about partying and having fun; there's a lot of meaning behind it. Let's take a closer look at what Cinco de Mayo is all about and why it's important.

First off, Cinco de Mayo is not Mexican Independence Day, as some people think. Mexican Independence Day is celebrated September 16

. Cinco de Mayo commemorates the Mexican army's victory over the French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. This battle was a big deal because the Mexican army was much smaller and less equipped than the French army, yet they still managed to win. It was a moment of pride and resilience for the Mexican people!

Cinco de Mayo is celebrated to honor the bravery and courage of the Mexican soldiers who fought in the battle. It's a time to remember their sacrifice and to celebrate Mexican heritage and culture. For many Mexican Americans, and Mexicans alike Cinco de Mayo is a way to connect with their roots and celebrate their identity. It’s a time to enjoy traditional Mexican food, music, and dance. Many people also celebrate with parades, festivals, and parties. It's a joyful occasion that brings people together to celebrate and have a good time.

So how are you getting involved this year to show support for Cinco de Mayo? There are many opportunities for your organization to sponsor, volunteer, or attend these festivals. Showing support for important cultural celebrations is your first step to creating inclusive relationships. So, let’s look at some celebrations around the country and see how they are being supported by organizations, businesses, and individuals!

But before we jump in, I want to share an unfortunate story to showcase what not supporting these cultural celebrations looks like, and the negative impact it makes. In 2023 I had been living and working in Colorado. There was a local nonprofit who organized an annual 42-yearlong Cinco de Mayo celebration on Main Street downtown. Unfortunately, in 2023, the organization who organizes the festival received an email simply informing them that they could no longer use the downtown Main Street because there was a bike festival scheduled over their Cinco de Mayo weekend! The Latino community was devastated and called me in desperation to find a new location last minute for the long running festival. Luckily, I worked for the city, and we stepped in and were able to find them an alternate location for that year, but the everlasting effects of exclusion and discrimination against this community will always remain. The Latino community will forever share their story and their distrust with the organization that cancelled their celebration. The good news is in 2024 the Local Nonprofit has re-established their space on the main strip. But when communities are treated as such, it is almost impossible to come back from that, and it speaks volumes to disgrace and remove an established cultural celebration to make room for a bike race! Ensure that your business, organization, and employees recognize the significance and value of cultural festivals. Ignorance of diversity can have detrimental effects on communities.

Now let’s talk about some positive support around the county.

I just spent a weekend in San Antonio Texas during the Fiesta celebration. From the moment I got off the plane it was evident that the Latino culture and celebrations were vibrant in this community. So, I am not surprised to learn that the City of San Antonio organizes one of the largest Cinco de Mayo celebrations in the United States. Their 2-day celebration features live music, food, cultural performances, kids’ activities, and more. This is truly a testament to showing support and celebrating cultural communities!

Much like Texas, the Latino culture and presence in California is evident and vibrant so it makes sense that the City of Los Angeles is on the 84th Annual Cinco de Mayo Festival at Olvera Street. This vibrant celebration is dedicated to promoting Latino culture, arts, education, economic partnerships, and intercultural connections. This festival includes music, dancing, carnival games, education and more.

Finally in Denver, Colorado, the NEWSED Community Development Corporation along with numerous local sponsors organizes Colorado’s largest Cinco de Mayo celebration! The “Celebrate Culture" festival in Denver's Civic Center Park features live entertainment, food, Kids activities, and a parade.

So where do you live, and what’s happening in your community? Start researching now and see what your organization can do to show support and get involved with this important holiday. Some quick options to get involved can include, volunteering, marketing their events on your social media channels to boost awareness, post a celebratory post making sure to include the historical components, and if anything, just attend the event and show support!

Are You Keeping Up with the Changing World?

           Why should you ADAPT?

As a business owner, event planner, or organizational leader, you may be asking yourself, "Why does diversity and equity work matter to me?

Why is it important that I adjust and adapt things?"

Well, let's talk about it. While many organizations still fail to see the importance of diversity and equity, many larger corporations, nonprofits, and city governments are starting to realize that they need to move forward and adapt to our ever-changing world. Maybe you've been running a successful business for a long time, and you just don't understand why you need to change things that aren't broken.

In a perfect world, I would love to simply say, "Because it's the right thing to do." However, we don't live in a perfect world, so instead of saying that let's look at some statistics.

According to the US Census, by 2045, the White, non-Hispanic population will no longer be the majority in the United States. The African American population will increase by 30%. The Hispanic population will increase by a whopping 60%, and the Asian American population is predicted to double. With these massive shifts in population, I think it might be more important to ask yourself, "Can you afford to not serve the majority of the population?"

Now, more than ever, building relationships with cultural organizations is crucial for the success and longevity of any business.

Here are a couple of reasons why:

            Diverse talent pool:

This allows your organization or business to attract and maintain the best talent, fresh perspectives, problem-solving skills, different approaches, and fresh ideas. Diverse talent drives business growth in a competitive world.

           Enhanced decision-making:

Cultural diversity contributes to better decision-making and business outcomes through cultural synergy. It enhances creativity, innovation, and problem-solving abilities. Having a broader understanding of global markets and customers will lead to positive business growth.

           Competitive marketing:

Cultural awareness allows businesses to penetrate new markets successfully. Understanding cultural nuances helps tailor products, services, and marketing strategies to specific regions, leading to better market coverage and growth.

           Positive work environment:

Building relationships with cultural organizations contributes to a positive, inclusive work environment. Employees feel valued and respected when you respect and celebrate their cultural backgrounds; this will lead to higher morale, productivity, and less turnover.

            Cultural intelligence:

Collaborating allows businesses to develop cultural intelligence, essential for success in a globalized world. You need to understand cultural norms, nuances, and communication styles and strategies.

Ultimately, a diverse workforce and collaborations and relationships with diverse communities and organizations allow a workforce that embraces and encourages each other's differences. Put your business in the best position for long-term growth and success while navigating obstacles and increasing growth in an ever-changing world.

Join the Initiative, or risk falling behind!

In today's multicultural workplaces, it's essential to celebrate diversity and create inclusive environments where every employee feels valued and respected. One powerful way to achieve this is through employee celebrations that honor the cultural diversity of your staff. These celebrations not only foster a sense of belonging but also create opportunities for learning and appreciation of different cultures. Let's talk about some ideas on how to organize and celebrate cultural diversity in your workplace.

First and foremost, it's important to understand the cultural backgrounds of your employees. Take the time to learn about the different cultures represented in your workplace, including their traditions, holidays, and customs. Feel confident in communicating with your employees about the goal of these events. Remember, if employees are made aware that you would like to celebrate their culture, they will feel respected and valued in their workplace. Please make sure you never assume someone’s cultural background without concrete knowledge. This knowledge is important to help you plan celebrations that are meaningful and respectful to all employees.

One of the simplest ways to celebrate cultural diversity is by organizing potluck lunches where employees can bring dishes from their culture to share with their colleagues. This not only introduces everyone to new and delicious foods but also creates a sense of unity and friendship among team members. Additionally, you could ask everyone to write a small description sharing information about the food, its origin, and who taught them how to make it etc. This leads to a more personal celebration of food and culture.

Make sure that when organizing potlucks, all divisions are included in these celebrations. Too often, I've seen celebrations that are accessible only for office staff, coordinators, and managers, but exclude maintenance staff, front desk staff, etc. If you are not able to include everyone at the same time, facilitate ways to allow different teams to celebrate at different times. Inclusivity is vital!

Another idea is to host cultural awareness events where employees can showcase their culture through music, dance, or traditional clothing. This allows employees to share their heritage with their colleagues and educates others about different cultures in a fun and interactive way. Some fun ways to do this could be on employee appreciation days and could be facilitated in the style of a fashion show showcasing several cultures throughout the event. Personal stories and slides could be shared to further educate and celebrate the rich cultures in your workplace.

In addition to celebrating specific cultures, it's also important to recognize and celebrate multiculturalism. Consider organizing events or activities that highlight the beauty and benefits of a diverse workforce, such as diversity panels, cultural competency workshops, or diversity-themed movie screenings.

Employee celebrations for culturally diverse staff can also extend to holidays and observances from around the world. For example, you can acknowledge Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights, by decorating the office with diyas (lamps) and offering traditional sweets. Similarly, you can celebrate Lunar New Year by providing red envelopes with lucky money. Whenever choosing to celebrate another's culture, please make sure to create an educational component to accompany the fun!

Finally, it’s important to involve employees in the planning and organization of these celebrations to ensure that they are inclusive and respectful of all cultures. Encourage employees to share their ideas and traditions and collaborate with them to create meaningful and engaging events. Make sure to create a survey system before creating any event to make sure the employees are on board with any cultural celebrations you may be thinking of. Remember, ideas are not successful unless they are supported by those they are supposed to celebrate!

In conclusion, employee celebrations for culturally diverse staff are a powerful way to promote diversity and inclusion in the workplace. By organizing events that honor the cultural backgrounds of your employees, you not only create a more inclusive environment but also foster a sense of pride and belonging among your team members. So, embrace diversity, celebrate multiculturalism, and watch as your workplace becomes a more vibrant and inclusive community.

So, whatever you decide, just remember to get creative, be respectful, and have fun!

National Arab American Heritage Month is a time in April to celebrate the contributions of Arab Americans to the United States. During NAAH Month, there are events across the country to celebrate. Some of these events include festivals, art shows, music, and more. They give everyone a chance to learn about and enjoy Arab American culture.

So, let’s look at some of the upcoming events around the US and the different ways to show up and show support!

Larger festivals in Texas, Chicago, LA, and other cities feature film screenings, workshops, and discussions. For example, the Arab American Cultural & Community Center in Houston hosts book and fine art fairs, poetry recitals, and engaging talks. The University of Illinois offers a month of programs, including workshops, lectures, and film screenings. But if you are looking for something the whole family will enjoy maybe a family festival is better suited! Attending family-friendly festivals is a great way to celebrate and support Arab American culture. Events like the New York Arab Festival, the Arab American Cultural Fair in San Francisco, and the Arab American Community Center of Florida's annual festival feature music, dance, food, and more. You can generally find local festivals in your community or neighboring community with a simple Google search.

However, you chose to show support for NAAH Month, just do it! This is a time to celebrate and learn about the contributions of Arab Americans. It's a time to appreciate diversity and build connections among all communities in the United States. But, most importantly it’s a time to show support.

This month is also an opportunity to address and combat stereotypes and misconceptions that exist about Arab Americans. By promoting awareness and understanding of their culture, traditions, and values, NAAH Month fosters a more inclusive and respectful society.

What is a block party, you might ask?

Community block parties are a great way to bring people together for a day of celebration. These events can be for a large community and include a variety of activities for all ages, including games, live music, food vendors, and more. Kids can enjoy bounce houses and face painting, while adults can socialize, play games like cornhole or volleyball, and enjoy food and drinks. However, block parties can also feature a smaller neighborhood and be put together with small amounts of effort. You can host a community block on a small street or community grass space, offering BBQ or potlucks, and include simple games such as cornhole, badminton, chess, checkers, and kids’ activities like sidewalk chalk, kiddie pools, and bubbles. Recorded music and playlists make for great entertainment, and this will still satisfy the community connection goal you are looking to achieve!

One of the best things about community block parties is the sense of solidarity they promote. It's a chance for residents to come together, meet their neighbors, and strengthen the bonds that make any community strong. Block parties often have a festive atmosphere, with music playing, kids laughing, and awesome smells of food wafting through the air.

These events are a highlight of the year for many communities, providing a chance to relax, have fun, and celebrate the unique spirit of their neighborhood. Whether it's a small gathering on a single block or a larger event that brings together several streets or even an entire neighborhood, block parties are an old school tradition that creates lasting memories.

But community block parties are more than just a fun time with neighbors; they offer so many benefits that can strengthen communities and improve the quality of life for residents. These events bring people together in a shared space, fostering a sense of belonging and connection that is often lacking in today’s separated society, especially with the pandemic and its everlasting effects.

Let’s look at some benefits of why your neighborhood should start planning a block party!

Block parties build a sense of community. They provide an opportunity for residents to come together, meet their neighbors, and build relationships. In today's fast-paced world, many people don't know their neighbors, leading to feelings of isolation.

Block parties help break down these barriers and create a sense of community.

Block parties encourage social interaction among people of all ages. From kids playing games to adults chatting and getting to know each other, these events promote a sense of solidarity and friendship that can have long-lasting effects.

They improve neighborhood safety and promote a sense of pride! When neighbors know each other and look out for one another, neighborhoods are safer. Additionally, when residents come together to plan and host a block party, they take pride in their community, and this can lead to greater investment in the neighborhood to maintain its beauty and keep it clean!

Block parties break down cultural barriers. Communities are diverse, with residents from various cultural backgrounds. Block parties provide an opportunity for people to share their cultural traditions, music, food, and more, promoting understanding and appreciation of different cultures.

Block parties boost mental health! Social connections are necessary for mental health and well-being. Block parties can help reduce feelings of loneliness and isolation, especially among our elder populations.

Finally, block parties are super affordable if not free to put together. the main piece of a successful block party is a dedicated group or individual to coordinate the event. Neighbors can pitch to collect games, tables, chairs, BBQ, food etc. Many communities’ city government or Parks and Recreation departments offer block party trailers that are free to use. They generally have tables, chairs, trash cans, and numerous games and activities to get your party started. Check out your local Parks and Recreation to find out if your city offers this service.

In conclusion, community block parties offer a range of benefits that can help strengthen neighborhoods, improve social connections, and enhance overall quality of life for residents by bringing people together in a spirit of fun and celebration. These events help create a sense of community that is necessary for building strong, resilient neighborhoods. Never underestimate the power of community. Remember, we are stronger together!

Have fun at your next block party!

In today's competitive job market, the process of interviewing and resume evaluation has become increasingly challenging for many qualified individuals. Despite possessing the necessary skills, experience, and qualifications, many applicants find themselves.

disqualified due to various factors in the hiring process. Let's talk about why this happens and how it can be damaging to both the candidates and the employers.

One of the primary reasons for disqualifying qualified applicants is the reliance on traditional and rigid interview and screening practices. Many companies still conduct interviews using standardized questions that may not assess an applicant's true potential, even though they possess valuable skills and experience. Another issue is the over-reliance on resume screening software, which can lead to qualified candidates being overlooked. But let's not forget the high-pressure interview settings that can throw off even the most qualified applicant! Yet, after all this, we still have to deal with biases in the hiring process, which can play a significant role in disqualifying qualified applicants based on factors such as race, gender, age, or educational background.

So, what does this tell us? What can we do to secure the jobs we are qualified for?

The reality is this is an issue for both the applicants and the employers. The applicants being disqualified from a job opportunity can be demoralizing and can have long-term effects on their confidence and career path. It can also perpetuate inequalities in the workforce, especially for marginalized groups who may already face barriers to employment. For employers, disqualifying qualified applicants can result in missed opportunities to hire top talent and can lead to higher turnover rates and lower employee morale if less qualified applicants are hired in their place.

           So, w

           hat do we do?

In a perfect world, we would leave this solution up to the hiring company. They should take steps to assess and improve their hiring practices. This could include implementing more inclusive and flexible interview processes that allow candidates to showcase their skills and experiences in a meaningful way and invest in training and education for hiring managers to reduce biases in the hiring process. Until employers start to make tangible movement in this are

           a,

we need to prepare before interviews.

Interview practice and training are gold. I have spent many years working with others to prepare them for the dreaded interview, and I’ve seen massive success with this practice with others and myself. It’s important to remember that practice makes perfect.

However, if you don’t have the opportunity to work with an interview trainer, here are some steps to help you prepare:

Anticipate some of the general questions you may be asked based on the position you are applying for and rehearse in front of a mirror how you might answer those questions.

Don’t be afraid to take a notepad to your interview with some bullet points of experience and stories. Use keywords that will trigger answers and experience you might otherwise forget when under pressure.

Don’t forget to pause; you are not a robot, and employers do not expect immediate responses. Take a breath and think for a few seconds before responding so you can better articulate and sell yourself.

Take water. You will probably be nervous, sweat, and get dry mouth. Always take water and take pauses and sips throughout the interview.

Wear white or very dark-colored shirts or a blazer. You will perspire when nervous, and your confidence will plummet when you realize you have huge visible sweat pools under your armpits! (trust me on this)

Try to be confident, hold your head up high, and practice, practice, practice. Remember, they are just people on the other side of that table.

Make sure to research the company before your interview. You never want to walk into an interview not knowing who the company is, what they do, or their values.

In conclusion, the practice of disqualifying qualified applicants is a significant issue in today's job market. By reevaluating traditional interview and resume practices and addressing biases in the hiring process, employers can improve their ability to identify and hire top talent, leading to more successful and diverse workplaces. However, in the meantime, work on your skills, seek out qualified interview trainers, and breathe.

           You Can Do This!

Are you looking for safe, fun ways to learn about culture? One of the best ways to educate yourself, your family, and your employees about culture is to attend community events!

Cultural community events are vibrant celebrations of diversity. These celebrations bring people together to share their culture, traditions, and values. They are not just gatherings; they are lively showcases of art, music, dance, food and so much more. These events serve as a platform for artists and performers to showcase their talents. Local musicians, dancers, and performers can tell their stories and show their visual art, ultimately providing an outlet for creative expression.

Cultural events really offer a unique experience that's fun and educational, and such a great way to meet new people. These events create such a feeling of unity and belonging that transcends our cultural differences. But what is it about these events that make such a big impact?

One of the key reasons why cultural community events are so enjoyable is the opportunity to explore in a judgement-free way. You can learn about their dance, their music, watch amazing performances, and taste their delicious and interesting foods. You also have a front-row seat to learn new and interesting things about their culture and history that you may have never known, and probably didn’t learn in school.

Did you know in the Tongan community you are to always create a space in front of the stage to prevent people from gathering or sitting in front of their elders and royalty? In Russia, if you accidently step on someone’s foot, that person is to lightly repay the misstep by stepping on your foot; In doing so, it will prevent any future conflict or ill will between them! Finally, in Spain, eating 12 grapes at the stroke of midnight on New Year’s Eve welcomes good fortune and prosperity in the new year.

There are many free calendars you can find online that include the cultural holidays celebrated in the US. One of my favorite calendars is the National PTA Multicultural calendar. The reason I love this calendar is they add clickable links to each holiday that includes more information and history about the celebration and origination.

With so many amazing holidays coming up, you don’t want to miss out. Right around the corner, we have the Nowruz celebration in March, Arab American Heritage Month celebrations in April, and Africa Day celebrations in May.

Cultural community events are celebrations of diversity and show the power of cultural expression and unity. These events offer unique and unforgettable experiences and are a testament to the beauty and richness of cultural diversity.

The Impact of Being an Ally

           Are You An Ally?

Being an ally promotes inclusivity, diversity, and equality. An ally is someone who supports and speaks up for marginalized and underrepresented groups and communities. Allies play significant roles in creating a more inclusive and equitable world by using their Privilege and influence to amplify the voices of those who may not have had the same opportunities or resources they had. When you stand up for people, you show that you're "on their side" when they need help.

One reason it’s so important to be an ally is to help to break down systemic oppression and discrimination. So many marginalized groups face barriers and challenges in society due to these injustices such as racism, xenophobia, homophobia and more. Allies can really help challenge this and raise awareness by advocating for others and advocating for change in the face of discrimination and injustice.

When you're an ally, you can help create a safe space and a sense of belonging for other communities and individuals.

Would you stand up for your friend if they were being bullied? Would you stand up for your friend if you heard people talking about them when they weren’t around? I assume the answer is yes. So, why would you not stand up for a group of people that you claim to care for and respect? Why would you let your friends, family, or strangers say things about groups of people that you don’t agree with?

If we allow others to put down, disrespect, or abuse communities and we say nothing, are complicit in their acts?

Let’s look at the impact of Allies!

Constance McMillian is a Mississippi teen whose prom was cancelled, then secretly rescheduled without her inclusion; all because she wanted to bring her girlfriend to the prom and wear a tuxedo. All her classmates attended the secret prom and celebrated with pictures and stories while Constance was excluded and discriminated against for being gay. Her classmates were complicit in this discrimination.

Fortunately, in the case of Abby Brammer, people were not complicit. Abby was a 17-year-old African American high school student who was hired unseen then promptly fired by the restaurant owner when he saw she was black. Even though the owner and adjacent businesses were complicit with the discrimination, Abby, along with her coworker, and 40 of her high school friends were not. The teens arranged a protest outside of the restaurant gaining media attention, ultimately decreasing the restaurant’s business, and causing its eventual closure.

If you support the differences in everyone and believe we all should have equal treatment and rights, then what is holding you back from speaking up for others?

Being an ally can lead to positive social change. Being an ally can lead to meaningful relationships and impactful community connections. We have one chance on this planet to stand up for what is right, and use our voice, privilege, and influence to help others. If you choose not to use this voice you are as guilty as their oppressors.

In the United States, we love to celebrate holidays from around the world, especially considering the country is home to more than 1500 ethnicities, races, and tribal groups! This diversity contributes to a vibrant array of cultural celebrations. However, it also raises the question: When does our celebration become disrespectful to someone else’s culture? This issue is particularly relevant in a society where cultural appropriation and insensitivity occur.

As St. Patrick’s Day approaches, many of us are preparing our green outfits, and choosing what pubs to visit for our pints of green beer. But what is the true origin of St. Patrick’s Day, and is our modern celebration appropriate?

St. Patrick’s Day is a global celebration of Irish culture, originating in Ireland to honor Saint Patrick, who died on March 17

    </sup>

461 AD. Despite not being Irish himself, Saint Patrick became a significant figure in Irish history, arriving in Ireland in 433 to preach the gospel and convert thousands to Christianity. Legends say he used the three-leaf clover to explain the Holy Trinity. St Patrick’s day was originally a religious observance, with all pubs in Ireland required to close until the 1970’s when it became more associated with festivities and drinking. The first parade in America started in New York City in the 1700’s where there was a spirited gathering of homesick Irish ex-patriots and Irish military members serving with the British Army. During the parade, participants celebrated in the freedom to speak Irish, wear green, sing Irish songs, and play the pipes to Irish tunes that made them feel of home.

Given the rich history of celebrations like St Patrick’s day, its crucial to consider how we can respectfully honor these traditions. While some may find certain celebrations offensive, it’s essential to pay homage to the original traditions and reasons behind the holiday. Attending cultural festivals, educating yourself about the holiday’s significance, and being respectful in your celebrations are key. This might also mean incorporating traditional foods, music, and customs into your celebrations. Finally, sharing this knowledge with others can make you an ally in promoting understanding and respect for different cultures.

So, as you enjoy your green beer and festivities, take a moment to acknowledge the history and significance of Saint Patrick’s Day.

Social Wealth

Does Social Wealth Impact Your Community?

What is Social Wealth? Social Wealth is defined as the total value of the resources that you have to meet your social or emotional needs. Social Wealth is one part of Total Wealth. So, how does Social Wealth differ based on socioeconomic status? If we break down Social Wealth to the social connections and interactions you have with people, can that truly change the outcome of our socioeconomic status?

In my years working in special events one of the primary things I’ve noticed is different people come together for similar interests! Whether it be music, theatre or dance, special events break down the barriers that will usually keep us separate.

Take a trip with me while I view this as a “who you know versus what you know” scenario and let’s see how improving aspects of one’s social wealth could potentially make real impacts in your community.

So, let’s call her Susan, Susan attended a concert at your event, and Ana attended the same concert. Susan is a doctor, and she comes from a long line of successful doctors. Ana just finished nursing school at the top of her class, and she comes from a long line of hard-working farmers.

Ana applied to many amazing hospitals but never got a position and ended up at a small clinic making a very low wage. Ana is not sure why she didn’t get one of the better positions, but she is proud of the job she did get and is working hard.

So, Susan and Ana both attend this concert showcasing a band they both love. They stand next to each other; they chat a bit, and they really connect about the music. After an hour or so, they decide to grab some food from the food trucks together. While eating, they start talking about their careers, and Ana mentions the hospitals she applied to but didn’t get the jobs. Susan works at one of those hospitals and asks ana to send her her resume. Later that week, Ana gets a call from the hospital for a second interview. Turns out, Susan recommended her after their time at the concert together…. Ana gets the job. Ana’s pay doubles. Ana moves to a better neighborhood. Ana’s kids go to a better school. Was Anna’s life positively impacted by meeting Susan? Were Anna’s kids’ lives impacted?

Special Events offer a rare ability to offer people from all walks of life the opportunity to find commonality with one another through shared interests. But for this to happen, it is your job to make sure that your events, and your programs are inclusive of all community members! It is one thing to invite everyone to your events, but it is another thing to make sure that everyone is included! Some small things you can start doing to make your events more inclusive include translating your materials and offering a diverse selection of programs that celebrate your entire community!

           How did you show up?

Every February in the US, we celebrate Black History Month to honor the African Americans who helped shape the nation. Their Contributions and Sacrifices molded the country to what it is today. However, with February wrapping up, we see the many vibrant celebrations come to an end. While many communities find ways to celebrate black history throughout the year, February is truly the time to claim our own.

New York held extensive exhibits all over the city, San Antonio, Texas kicked off their celebrations in January with the largest MLK day parade in the Nation, which set the scene for Black History Month celebrations and exhibits. The Oakland Museum of California held a powerful Black Panther Party exhibit that traveled through twelve sites that were significant in the organization’s history.

How did your organization support Black History Month? Did you volunteer, attend, or help support any local Black History Month events, or did you just put up an obligatory “Happy Black History Month” banner on your website? If you showed up, that’s great. But if you didn’t show up, why would you expect the African American community to do business with you, or establish relationships with your organization?

Does your organization truly want to support, include, and gain business with all community members? If so, it is vital that you support their celebrations, holidays, history, and culture.

The good news is, even though it’s too late for Black History Month, Juneteenth is just around the corner. Juneteenth honors the end of slavery in the United States and is the longest-running African American holiday. So, now is the time to start thinking about how you can support and elevate the African American Community and their celebrations in June.

Get prepared and start outreaching to the African American community. Find out how you can support their events or work to create your own. Remember, most organizations, especially nonprofits, always have a need for volunteers, visibility, and funding for these events. So, start talking with your staff about what you have to offer or what you can do to make sure that you are becoming part of the conversation and part of the celebration, rather than being an obligatory banner!
